NightScapes

My NightScapes are exposures of the night sky with a landscape feature. All are evening time exposures. The starry night sky with Milky Way are a favorite subject. Special techniques are used with off-the-shelf digital cameras and lenses in order expose the night stars without blurring (trails) them. Some land features are enhanced with light painting. Please note that many images will have considerable "graininess" or digital noise due to the high ISO speeds required to do this type of night photography (capturing the stars and the land features in one unique exposure). DOWNLOADS: Many of my NightScapes are available as HD personal use downloads (about 1920 x 1080 pixels) for $2.99 at my 500px store. • Milky Way Stars over John Moulton barn and homestead, Grand Teton National Park. Photographed @ 11:30 PM (2.5 hours after sunset). Light Painting added to enhance recognition. This photo was taken from the "backside" of the barn in order to line up with the Milky Way at this season of the year.
  • Milky Way Dawn over Grand Teton Range. Partly cloudy in front of the Milky Way stars. Pre-dawn (3:28 AM) ~ about two hours and 45 minutes before sunrise. Taken from the Elk Ranch Flats Turnout, Grand Teton National Park.

  • Starry night over Grand Teton Range. Milky Way stars over Grand Tetons from the Cascade Canyon Overlook in Grand Teton National Park. The foreground was light-painted with 2-million candlepower spotlight from camera right. This view is looking southeast, and was taken about three hours after sunset. The orange glow to the left of the Milky Way is light pollution from the town of Jackson, WY, about 20 miles away. The orange glow in the notch of the Teton Range is from the Idaho Falls metro area, about 75 miles away.

  • Starry night sky over Teton Range, Grand Teton National Park. Cirrus clouds, backlighted by stars give the impression of an aurora borealis. Note the meteor and a portion of the Big Dipper pointing to the North Star, Polaris, in the top right corner.
  • Airglow and faint aurora borealis or northern lights (due to recent massive solar flares</a>) seen over the Teton Range on July 17, 2012 at 12:55 AM, as clouds roll in. Twenty minutes later, the sky was almost completely obscured with cloud cover. This is looking over Jackson Lake. The light on the lake is from the Signal Mountain marina. The Grand Teton is on the far left. Mount Moran is in the center (directly west @ 270º). Above Moran is the yellow-orange star, Arcturus, and the bright one above that is Izar, both in the constellation Bootes (see notes). The brightest blue star at the very top (directly in line with Moran) is Alphekka, in the constellation Corona Borealis.
  • Milky Way stars over Signal Mountain lookout, Grand Teton National Park. Looking south at 1:44 AM, June 13th. Orange cloud glow between the trees is light pollution from Jackson, WY (27 miles away).
