NightScapes

My NightScapes are exposures of the night sky with a landscape feature. All are evening time exposures. The starry night sky with Milky Way are a favorite subject. Special techniques are used with off-the-shelf digital cameras and lenses in order expose the night stars without blurring (trails) them. Some land features are enhanced with light painting. Please note that many images will have considerable "graininess" or digital noise due to the high ISO speeds required to do this type of night photography (capturing the stars and the land features in one unique exposure). Stars over Ward Charcoal Ovens

Starry night sky over light painted Ward Charcoal Ovens. These six beehive-shaped historic charcoal ovens located about 18 miles south of Ely, Nevada in the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. The ovens reduced charcoal from local pinyon pine and juniper from 1876 through 1879 for the smelting of silver at the Ward Mining District, just a few miles to the north. The ovens were eventually phased out completely due to depleted silver ore deposits and a shortage of available timber.

  • Starry night sky over the Bryce Canyon Amphitheater in Bryce Canyon National Park. I am at Sunset Point, looking south to Inspiration Point.
  • Stars and Milky Way behind 'The Mask' - Bryce Canyon National Park. This is the northern end of the Milky Way, with many constellations like the Paleiades, or Seven Sisters (star cluster just above right eyebrow of The Mask).
  • Milky Way star canopy over the narrow 'Wall Street' canyon in Bryce Canyon National Park. Light painting at night shows orange and red rock formations which rise about 700 feet above this popular hiking trail on the 'Navajo Loop'. This extremely wide angle photo, look virtually straight up, was taken with an LF 15mm f2.8 Fisheye (180-degree view diagonally) lens on the full-frame Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
  • Moonrise at the Fortress - a Bryce Canyon National Park formation - Note Pleiades and Jupiter
  • I was remotely lighting this 750-feet wide formation from the right (with 2-million candlepower), when the moon began to rise just to the left. So, I quickly set up my light about 1,000 feet to the left to simulate light coming from the rising moon.
  • Starry night sky over Temple of the Moon - a sandstone monolith located in the remote Cathedral Valley of Capital Reef National Park. Temple of the Sun is in the distance, on the left. The Temple of the Moon is about 280 feet (85 m.) high. Photographed in one 15 seconds exposure, 2 hours after sunset. The glow on the horizon is the approaching moonrise.
  • Moonlight across Cathedral Valley. Starry night sky with moonlight streaking across the Upper Cathedral Valley monoliths in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. This is a remote area in the northern most region of the park that is only accessible with a four-wheel drive vehicle via primitive dirt roads and river crossings! The monument on the right is about 400 feet (122 m.) high. It is enhanced with light painting from two stationary incandescent lights and one handheld, 2-million candlepower quartz halogen light -- from a distance of 900 feet (274 m.) away.
